A leading American sculptor whose eagle and double eagle brought Beaux-Arts monumentality to circulating gold coinage.
生平
Saint-Gaudens trained in New York and Paris and became known for major public monuments and portrait reliefs. Theodore Roosevelt recruited him to improve American coinage, creating an unusual collaboration outside the Mint's normal engraving hierarchy.
风格与影响
He used energetic full figures, rhythmic drapery, classical allegory, strong silhouettes, and sculptural relief influenced by ancient coins and Beaux-Arts practice. The 1907 gold designs became central examples in debates over artistry and coinability. The double eagle's obverse later returned on American Eagle bullion coins, with adaptation and production credit belonging to later Mint artists.
