A prolific Chief Engraver whose designs accompanied the gold rush, Civil War, and major changes in federal denominations.
生平
Longacre built a national reputation in portrait and banknote engraving before his appointment. His tenure faced new gold denominations, political pressure, technological change, and the need to create small copper-nickel coins with durable relief.
风格与影响
He favored compact classical portraits, feathered headdresses, wreaths, shields, and inscriptions integrated into dense but legible compositions. Many designs were adjusted as alloys and striking requirements changed. Longacre's Indian Head cent, two-cent piece, three-cent nickel, gold dollar, and double eagle make his office central to mid-nineteenth-century coinage. His use of IN GOD WE TRUST on the two-cent piece became especially consequential.
