The first statutory Chief Engraver, responsible for translating the young republic's symbols into repeatable coinage dies.
生平
Scot worked as an engraver in Virginia and Philadelphia before his 1793 appointment. At the first Mint he oversaw die production through rapid changes in denominations, portraits, eagle reverses, and production methods.
风格与影响
His coinage uses formal Liberty profiles, stars, wreaths, and heraldic eagles. Attribution must be separated from execution because assistants and outside artists also supplied designs and models. Scot established the office and working practices inherited by later Chief Engravers. His long tenure spans the Draped Bust era and the Mint's move from experimentation toward a stable federal system.
