The young designer whose Liberty Bell and Moon composition became the Bicentennial Eisenhower dollar reverse.

Biography

Williams was an art student when he entered the national Bicentennial coin competition. His proposal was selected for the dollar and translated into coinage relief by the Mint's engraving staff.

Style and legacy

The reverse overlaps the Liberty Bell with the Moon, joining Revolutionary-era symbolism to the space age in a clear vertical composition. The design appeared on copper-nickel and silver-clad dollars and demonstrates that competition credit and Mint sculptural execution are separate roles.
