The Chief Engraver behind the Lincoln Memorial reverse, Kennedy half-dollar reverse, Eisenhower dollar, and Susan B. Anthony dollar.
Biography
Gasparro trained in Philadelphia and joined the Mint in 1942. He became Chief Engraver in 1965 after working under Sinnock and Roberts, carrying the office through rapid commemorative and small-dollar design changes.
Style and legacy
His designs use strongly framed architecture, heraldic eagles, and compact portrait relief designed for modern high-volume striking. Lettering is usually integral to the central geometry. Gasparro's reverses circulated on billions of cents and half dollars. His large and small dollar designs document the Mint's search for practical modern denominations.
