The British-trained engraver whose 1878 silver dollar became one of the most recognizable United States coin designs.

Biography

Morgan trained at the Royal Mint before coming to Philadelphia as an assistant engraver. He worked under Charles Barber for four decades, producing coins, patterns, and medals before becoming Chief Engraver late in life.

Style and legacy

His Liberty portraits are modeled with rounded sculptural volume and natural hair, while his reverses balance dense lettering with more naturalistic birds and wreaths. The Morgan dollar's long production, Treasury releases, and 2021 revival made Morgan's name unusually visible to collectors. His broader medal and pattern work shows a career much larger than one dollar design.
