A Comstock-era branch mint whose compact output of silver dollars, subsidiary silver, and gold made CC one of the most distinctive American mint marks.
Why it matters
Relatively short operating periods and strong western associations make CC issues central to Morgan dollar and nineteenth-century gold collecting. Scarcity varies sharply by date and denomination.
History
Authorized during the Civil War, the Alfred B. Mullett building took years to complete and began striking coins in 1870. Operations stopped after 1885, resumed in 1889, and ended permanently in 1893. The building later served as an assay office and became the Nevada State Museum.
