A Gulf Coast branch that served cotton commerce, imported specie, southern bullion deposits, and later the mass production of Morgan dollars.
Why it matters
O-mint issues connect antebellum commerce, Civil War disruption, Reconstruction, and the Morgan dollar era. Strike and survival patterns vary, making attribution by date, mark, and type essential.
History
The William Strickland-designed building opened in 1838. Coinage continued under changing authorities in 1861 before the Civil War halted operations. Federal production resumed in 1879 and continued through 1909. The building later served other federal uses and today houses the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
