NPS distinguishes two large fruit-bat species in American Samoa. Its account describes Samoan fruit bats roosting singly or in pairs and females often roosting with their young. This context supports reading the pair without assigning a birth date or a particular feeding event.
The park was established in 1988 and expanded in 2002. NPS explains that traditionally owned village lands were made available through a lease arrangement. The landscape is not an empty wilderness without continuing community relationships.
