A denomination, not one reverse

The modern 20-peso story includes a regular Hidalgo coin, round C commemoratives and twelve-sided C1 commemoratives. A shared face value does not make their reverse designs interchangeable.

From Hidalgo to circulating commemoratives, twenty pesos spans distinct objects. The Veracruz pair shown here is one C1 example within a broader denomination, not the design of every 20-peso coin.

The modern 20-peso story includes a regular Hidalgo coin, round C commemoratives and twelve-sided C1 commemoratives. A shared face value does not make their reverse designs interchangeable. The hero shows Veracruz, the first released C1 design, as an explicitly identified example. Its ship-and-palace composition commemorates 1519–2019; the coin itself entered circulation in 2020.

The B-family Hidalgo 20-peso coin entered circulation on 7 June 1993. Its round 32 mm form has a nominal mass of 16.996 g, a sterling-silver centre, an aluminium-bronze ring and interrupted reeding. It is a regular design, separate from the later commemorative census. The issuer lists this form as being withdrawn while retaining payment value; banks remove returned examples from circulation.
Source: Banco de México ↗The round C commemorative format is 32 mm and nominally 15.945 g. C1 changes the outline to twelve sides, the diameter to 30 mm and the mass to 12.67 g. For C1, the aluminium-bronze ring is 7.16 g and the alpaca centre 5.51 g. This technical comparison belongs to the formats; no single subject photograph is used to prove every coin in either family.
Source: Banco de México ↗The checked subject census contains 12 C and 14 C1 designs: 26 released commemoratives in total. The four FIFA 2026 subjects entered circulation on 13 May 2026 and are included. Regular Hidalgo is outside that commemorative total. The register below brings the subjects, families and release dates together, with detailed studies of Veracruz and Mennonites.
Source: Banco de México ↗C1 descriptions include a latent image and microtext, but the microtext is subject-specific. Veracruz uses 500 VERACRUZ; the Mennonite coin uses COMUNIDAD PIONERA. Read those details on their individual studies rather than applying one inscription to the complete denomination. A static face photograph can locate a feature, but cannot demonstrate the optical change produced when a real coin is tilted.
Source: Banco de México ↗The Kukulkán 20-peso design was authorized on 19 January 2026, but its actual release and official family assignment remain unconfirmed in the reviewed evidence. It is not added to the 26 released commemoratives. Separately, sources disagree over the Fire of the New Millennium coin’s centre alloy: the issuer page says alpaca, while the legal description gives cupronickel. The disagreement remains explicit.
Source: DOF ↗Veracruz explains the start of C1 through a port-city commemoration; Mennonites follows a centenary of arrival through its family, train and agricultural imagery. Their separate stories sit within this denomination’s larger technical and chronological framework. Anniversary dates, release dates and dates on specimens serve different purposes. Keeping those distinctions makes it possible to separate design changes from annual production records.
